(with apologies to Nayantara Sehgal!)
Gayu’s birthday is coming up soon, and we celebrated early since she’s heading off today. This gave me a chance to visit Jyothi home needs – the ‘mall’ of Bissamcuttack. Seriously, its like being in Vizag!! Big mirrors on the walls (like Madhu’s tea shop), shiny goods on clean white shelves, telegu speaking shop keeper who stocks cocoa powder, bush essence (pineapple btw not vanilla) and strawberry lip gloss!
At dinner, we spoke a wonderful mix of languages – oriya, kui, munda, ho, oraon, english, tamil, malayalam, german & hindi!! Gayu’s education into the world of fish and chicken had begun the day before with fresh prawns & fish from Dakulguda fisherfolk and chicken (from coop to pot) in the town. She said it felt like being on masterchef, so hopefully thats a sign that her cooking will go far :) Happy Birthday!!
