Brain Chatter & a Good Jaw

Over last year, I read a couple of interesting books. Books that as Oswald Chambers says ‘(the one)…who benefits you is not one who tells you something you did not know before, but the one who gives expression to the truth that has been struggling for utterance in you.’

So in the new year, I want to share 3 thoughts that I picked up from a brain scientist called Jill Bolte Taylor (watch her TED talk)

and yes, that is a brain she’s holding in her hand!

She had a stroke at the age of 37 and took 8 years to ‘recover’. She wrote a book called ‘My stroke of insight’ to help others who have had similar experiences, and to challenge the rest of us to grab that insight (without having to burst blood vessels)! She talks about the differences between the left & right hemispheres of our brains, and how our experience of life can change depending on how we choose to approach it.

1. She uses a lovely word: Brain Chatter. I’ve been trying over the last year, to watch my mind, to listen to & understand the voices inside my head (thanks to reading the Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle). But the word Brain Chatter – that fits perfectly. In my mind, that’s exactly what it is. My brain chattering on endlessly.  Taylor made me realise that this is my ‘left hemisphere’ doing its job and that times of quiet or ‘mind gaps’ are when the right takes over!

2. She talks about the 90 second rule. That it takes 90 seconds for limbic system programmes (emotions) that are triggered chemically, to surge through our bodies and are then flush out of our blood stream. It’s amazing that our bodies physiological response can last for just over a minute…and then let go… While our minds can hold onto emotion for years!

3. And finally, she talks about unclenching your jaw. How tight is yours clenched now as you read this? Do you need to unclench & relax your jaw? To my surprise, I realised that a lot of the time my jaw is subconsciously very tightly clenched. But what a simple thing to do to help you come back into the present moment, and not be dragging along the past or projecting into an imaginary future. Consciously, unclench your jaw!

So this is just a tiny sliver of what she (and Eckhart Tolle, among others) say so well. Hope you get a chance to explore these thought more

and be hit by a stroke of insight!
