Sharing the Pain

Today was a sad day. We lost D and B’s father. He had sickle cell anaemia, and was in crisis for more than 2 weeks. A tough time, and a release for him now. May his soul rest in peace.

D and B are some of the most fun loving people I know. Always making jokes, laughing so loud and infectiously that you just have to join in, singing movie songs loudly (even tamil songs sometimes!). Both such caring, kind and loving people. Heartbroken, heavy laden, exhausted with sorrow. How does one share their pain? I’m not sure. Today I stood helplessly by, wiping their tears, holding their hands, hearing the soundless cries of aching and agony. I pray that God will continue to grant them strength and courage. I hope some day I can show them Bishop Charles Henry Brent’s beautiful poem (the chaplain said something similar in Oriya today):

What is dying?

I am standing on the seashore.
A ship sails to the morning breeze and starts for the ocean.
She is an object and I stand watching her
Till at last she fades from the horizon,
And someone at my side says, “She is gone!” Gone where?
Gone from my sight, that is all;
She is just as large in the masts, hull and spars as she was when I saw her,
And just as able to bear her load of living freight to its destination.
The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her;
And just at the moment when someone at my side says, “She is gone”,
There are others who are watching her coming,
And other voices take up a glad shout,
“There she comes” – and that is dying.
